Dr. Tom Best Published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise

Tom Best, MDThe most recent edition of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise featured a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research report entitled, “Epidemiology of Knee Injuries among U.S. High School Athletes, 2005/2006 – 2010/2011” [2013;45, (3): 456-9]. The senior author was Dr. Tom Best, Professor of Family Medicine and Pomerene Chair. The study explored whether patterns of knee injuries in U.S. high school sports differ by sport and sex. It was determined that football had the highest knee injury rate followed by girls’ soccer and girls’ gymnastics. In fact girls had significantly higher knee injury rates than boys in several sex-comparable sports (soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball/softball, lacrosse, swimming and diving, and track and field).
