The purpose of the Warner M. and Lora Kays Pomerene Chair in Medicine (Pomerene Chair) is to provide a qualified individual with opportunities to apply and extend previously demonstrated expertise to advance the content and practice of primary care specialties, first through a personal research agenda and second through leadership and mentoring of others. The Pomerene Chair is expected to guide and facilitate:
- Innovative teaching, research, and patient care activities regarding particular aspects of primary health care and its practice.
- Communication of new knowledge, new theories, or even new dilemmas which will help define and further evolve the primary care specialties.
The Pomerene Chair must have a continuing record of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and service. Appointment level is professor with tenure. Presently, Thomas Best, MD, PhD serves as Pomerene Chair. He was appointed in 2005. Dr. Best also serves as Director of the Division of Sports Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine and is Co-Director of the Ohio State University Sports Medicine Center.
